67 – Avon and Kennet Canal

Probably the muddiest ride we have ever done – two miles into the ride the heavens opened so we got wet from the top as well as the muddy path, the entire 14 mile trip to Devizes saw us splashing through puddles along the narrow towpath.

The route is spectacular though, more appreciated on a better day, the various canal wharves at Bradford-on-Avon, Hilperton and the very impressive set of 29 locks at Caen Hill made the trip worthwhile. Following a coffee at a canal side pub in Devizes, the sun came out and the return journey was made via the road until we reached Hilperton, where we returned to the canal for the last 4 miles back to Avoncliff.

  1. Hi
On 28th August 2016 we organised a vintage motorcycle ride and used Caen Hill Locks café as one of the stops. The run is for our own pleasure but part of the proceeds go towards a healthy donation towards the Childrens Hospice South West which is our chosen charity.

I run a website for the club and forgot to take a photograph of the locks while we were there to use in the report. I found the Locks image you have on your Avon and Kennet canal ride report and as it is a very pleasing image may have permission to use it. I will of course give an attribution to the photographer if you let me know his name etc.

    Best regards

    1. Hi John
To be honest, we did not take the picture. I believe it was sourced from the internet so assume anyone can use it. It is a nice image.
Best of luck with your fundraising.
