Distance = 40 miles, Difficulty = 3/5

Seven riders made the trip across the bridge for an excellent ride over in North Somerset. Starting from Yatton Station and following the Strawberry Line to Cheddar, passing through the medieval town of Axbridge. The next challenge was the 2 mile Cheddar Gorge, the cyclists winding through the limestone cliffs including one brute of a corner measuring 16% which really tested the legs. Everyone made it though, and with a stop at the Queen Victoria Inn at Priddy for coffee, it was downhill to Wookey Hole via the very steep Deer Leap lane. Once back on the main road at Wells, it was a pedal down along the rolling main road to Cheddar before picking up the Strawberry Line back to Yatton.

We were joined on the ride by Michael and Linda Malolepszy from Newport Social Cycling, we hope that you enjoyed the ride.

An excellent turn-out of 14 riders saw the group leave the Choir Hall and head for Caerwent. Along the A48, then Five Lanes towards Carrow Hill before turning back to the A48 at the Rock and Fountain pub. A left turn before the Foresters Oaks saw a sharp climb up to Llandevaud before descending to Llanmartin. The last hill of the day  at Underwood and then onto Bishton and the lanes to the cafe at the Seawall.

Great to see four newcomers including old school mate, Tony Malarz and his daugher Kelly, and a couple of lads from Magor, David O’Shaughnessy and Mike Catlin. Welcome to you all.

CMCCC Difficulty – 5/5

What a ride, toughest by far this year, five riders made their way from Caldicot over Cats Ash, Usk, Nantyderry, Llanellen before reaching the foot of the infamous Tumble climb at Llanfoist. Following a short break to get some food and drink on board and the last opportunity to back out, it was up hill all the way to Keepers Pond and the summit of this 4 mile 10% average climb. With a stop for photos and a bit of back=slapping, you made our way downhill through Blaenavon and Pontypool eventually reaching Usk for a stop at Cafe 49 to consume some well deserved cakes and coffee. A good day was had by all, slightly spoiled by a mechanical issue for Dave Whittle on the Cats Ash climb. Still we all survived to fight another day.

Six riders met-up at the Choir Hall for the latest ride, including newcomers Catherine and Andy Rowlands from Cardiff. Nice to see you and welcome to the club. Hope you enjoyed it, you are welcome anytime.

The route saw us climb out of Caldicot via Dewstow Hill before joining the A48 at the Rock and Fountain. From there to Langstone and onto Cat’s Ash and Kemeys Inferior before crossing the river at Newbridge on Usk. After a brief photo stop it was climbing up through Tredunnock before joining the Usk Road at the Cwrt Bleddyn. Onwards into Caerleon with a stop at the interesting Fwrrwm, only to find that they were not serving coffee due to the busy Mother’s Day lunchtime. Caerleon resident Sue Earnshaw came to the rescue with coffee at her cottage adjacent to the castle. Fully refreshed it was back across the Usk to Bulmore and dissecting the 2010 Celtic Manor Golf Course before climbing back up to Cat’s Ash. A speedy descent into Langstone and homewards via Llanmartin, Magor and Rogiet.
